Unfortunately, groundwater cleanup costs can be much more than $1,000,000.
Groundwater Cleanup Costs at Kelly AFB
There are several groundwater contaminant plumes at Kelly. The Zone 4 plume will probably be the most expensive one to
cleanupb. Air Force estimates of the total cost of cleanup for the Zone 4 plume range from about $17,000,000 to about $46,000,000. These estimates include $13,000,000 that has already been spent investigating and installing remedial
systemsc.
Of course, all contaminant plumes are different and there are many differences between Kelly AFB and the proposed PGA Village. Groundwater at Kelly is shallow (10 - 30 feet below land surface) and the aquifer is composed primarily of clays, sand, and gravel. The major contaminants are solvents and fuels.
Groundwater at PGA Village (Edwards and Trinity aquifers) is relatively deep (approximately 250 feet below land
surface)d and the aquifers are composed of limestone. If PGA Village causes groundwater contamination, the major contaminants are likely to be pesticides and fertilizers.
